The Providence Athenaeum Founded in 1753 as an independent membership library, provides books and other materials to all, of any age, who love reading, appreciate literature, and enjoy cultural discovery. The Athenaeum's collections and historic building are maintained in the spirit of its founders in order to enrich the lives of all who enter its granite walls.
Catherine Hamilton A very dear friend of Figments, learned to identify birds at an early age with her father, an avid bird watcher, and by the time she was ten years old had accompanied him on many birding trips across the United States. Twenty years later, she picked up a pair of binoculars, a thirtieth birthday present from her father, and headed back out into the field.
Catherine turned this experience into an elegiac body of work that combines astonishing levels of observation with ruminations on current attitudes towards nature. Her ink drawings of birds and the wildlife refuges they inhabit hover between the science and romanticism of the 19th-century naturalist and the cynical awareness of the 21st-century artist.
